I’m a medical student documenting my clinical training while exploring the evolving role of radiology in patient care. Through this blog, I share reflections from the hospital and provide emerging, practical breakdowns of current research for fellow medical professionals.

What Interventional Radiology Actually Is (And Why I Chose It)

If you hear the word radiology, you probably picture someone sitting in a dark room reading scans.

I thought the same thing until my third year of medical school.

During my diagnostic and interventional radiology rotation, I got to see a completely different side of medicine. One that felt like the perfect mix of technology, problem-solving, and hands-on care.

Interventional radiology (IR) is exactly what it sounds like: using imaging to guide procedures inside the body without the need for large incisions. Instead of traditional surgery, many procedures are done through tiny entry points using tools guided by real-time imaging like fluoroscopy, CT, or ultrasound.

But what does that actually mean in practice?

It means:

  • Stopping internal bleeding without open surgery
  • Treating blocked arteries with precision
  • Targeting tumors directly with minimally invasive techniques
  • Placing drains, lines, and stents exactly where they need to go

What stood out to me wasn’t just the technology—it was the impact. Patients who might have needed major surgery could often go home the same or next day.

It felt like the best of both worlds:

  • The diagnostic side: understanding human anatomy deeply
  • The procedural side: actually doing something with that information

There’s a certain rhythm to it. You study the imaging, create a plan, and then execute it in real time. It’s focused, technical, and incredibly rewarding.

On this blog, I’ll be breaking down topics like:

  • How different imaging modalities work
  • Common interventional procedures (in simple terms)
  • New techniques and research in radiology

If you’ve ever been curious about what happens behind the scans, this is for you. Stay tuned for my posts in the coming weeks.
